Heads Up: The 2025 National Mah Jongg League Card Has a Printing Error

Heads Up: The 2025 National Mah Jongg League Card Has a Printing Error

If you’ve just cracked open your 2025 NMJL card and something feels off—you’re not imagining it. There’s an official printing error on this year’s card, and it’s already tripping up players across the country.

Here’s the error on the STANDARD CARD (Small Card):

If you have a Standard card, the 2468 #4 is mistakenly printed in one color and is actually a 3-suited hand

FFFF 2468 222 222 —This line is printed entirely in one color and it should be three colors.

👉  FFFF 2468 222 222

And on the LARGE CARD, there is a different error:

If you have a Large card, the Consecutive Run #3, second hand, is mistakenly printed in one color and is actually a 3 suited hand.

FFFF 1111 22 3333 —This line is printed entirely in one color and it should be three colors.

👉 In reality, what the hand should say is:

 FFFF 1111 22 3333

Here’s what’s working at tables right now:

  • Most groups are playing the card with the correction in mind

  • If you're playing with strangers or in tournaments, just be sure to agree on how to handle the hand before you start. A quick, friendly chat avoids awkward mid-game rule debates.

  • ✍️ Use a pen to mark the fix right on your card if it helps you remember during fast-paced play.

How should you proceed?

In the meantime, spread the word. There’s nothing worse than spending half the game building a hand that turns out to be impossible.

And if you’re teaching newer players, highlight this right away. It’s a tricky one, especially since it looks legit at first glance.

So yep—2025’s card has a misprint. But with a little awareness (and maybe a Sharpie), your game can keep rolling just fine.
